What's in The News Today

A Power Plant in Japan Exploded after a 8.9 earthquake, which caused leaking of radiation. Officials from Japan stated that radiation levels are decreasing. The protective vessel that surrounds the radium is still intact, but it still is at a great risk of an explosion, if that does happen that would release large amounts of radiation. A 12 mile evacuation from the plant has been put in place. The 1986 nuclear accident at "Chernobyl" in Russia caused over 6,000 cases of childhood thyroid cancers. If the residents at the time of the nuclear disaster would have taken iodine it would have blocked the intake of the radioactive material in the thyroid. Reports out of Japan did state that they were given residents close to the plant iodine as a protective measure.
At this point and time reports are stating there are 900 hundred dead, but numbers will increase.
The average earthquake last seconds to a minute, but Japan's earthquake was 5 minutes in duration with after shocks registering over 6.
