Twenty nine workers die in a Tommy Hilfiger Factory. Dangerous conditions were the cause of the deaths. Labor groups stated "locked gates and faulty wiring was the cause of nearly 500 deaths within the last 5 years." Tommy Hilfiger announced "he will commit to safety and spend $1 million to enforce it."  The twenty nine workers perished when a fire broke out from an electrical wire overload by sewing equipment in the high rise building. Buildings in Bangladesh lack fire escapes, sprinklers and other fire safety equipment. Many of the workers tried to escape, but gates were locked. Workers were forced to make a rope from fabric to escape the engulfed building.
