Hurricane kills 9 and two of them are children. One man is killed after a tree fell across the car he was in, a surfer drowned from a rough surf, man dies when he is thrown by a massive wave and hits his head, woman is killed when a tree fell on her house causing her chimney to collapse, man dies of a heart attack as he was boarding up his house, man dies as he is feeding his animals outside and tree limb crushed him, a 11-year-old was killed when a tree crashed through his apartment, a 15-year-old girl is killed in a car accident, due to traffic light that was not working from the effects of Irene.
The storm did less damage than predicted, but it did cause damage. Flooding occurred in some areas and many trees are down. More than 4.5 million are without electricity. Over 8,000 flights canceled affecting millions of people and this could last for days.
