New recommendations for pap smears. Healthy women under the age of 65 only need a Pap every three years. This information is coming from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. They  concluded with "Women may be over tested, which can lead to over treatment and cause low-grade lesions." The task force stated "that there is no direct evidence that annual screening achieves a better outcome than every three years." The screening should begin at the age of 18 and non-sexually active women the age of 21. Women can also stop having the screening after the age of 65 if they have had normal pap test. The same goes for women that have had a hysterectomy.
